The start of a fresh year usually means we all try to eat more veggies or go for more jogs. It is a time for a clean slate and big goals. But why should we be the only ones to make a change?
Our pets are our best friends and they live in our homes with us every day. They deserve a fresh start, too! Making a few simple goals with your furry pal is a great way to bond. It helps them stay fit, happy, and full of life for a long time.
You do not need to do anything too hard. Small changes can make a big difference for a dog, a cat, or even a bunny. Here are some of the best ways to make this year the most paw-some one yet for your buddy.
1. Step into the Great Outdoors 🌳

We often walk our dogs because we have to, but this year, let’s walk because we want to. Dogs see the world with their noses. Instead of rushing to the park, try a “sniffari”. This is a walk where your dog chooses which way to go. They get to stop and sniff every leaf if they want. This keeps their brain very busy and makes them much happier than a fast run.
If you want to find some new places to explore, the RSPCA has a guide on how to get fit with your dog safely. Try to find a new path or a different woods once a week. New smells are like a new book for your furry friend!
2. The Battle of the Bulge 🏃♀️

Many pets in the UK are a little too heavy. It might look like they have extra fluff, but it can make their legs and hearts work too hard. According to vets, in the UK, 50% of dogs and 43% of cats are overweight. You can check if your pet is the right size by looking at their shape from above.
You should be able to feel their ribs but not see them. If you are worried about their weight, the PDSA offers great tips on how to help them slim down safely. Instead of giving a whole biscuit as a treat, try a tiny piece. Your pet will still be just as happy to get a snack from you!
3. Brain Games and New Tricks 🧠

A bored pet can sometimes get into trouble. They might chew a shoe or scratch the sofa because they have nothing else to do. This year, resolve to give them more “brain work”.
For cats, you can use puzzle feeders. These are toys that hide food inside. Your cat has to move the toy to get the kibble out. This mimics how cats hunt in the wild.
For dogs, you could teach them a fun new trick every month. It could be something simple like “high five” or “spin”. Using positive rewards makes training a fun game for both of you. You can find a list of expert trainers at the ABTC if you need some help.
4. Sparkly Smiles 🦷

Did you know that most pets have some tooth trouble by the time they are three years old? Stinky breath is not just a part of being an animal. It can mean their gums are sore. Brushing your pet’s teeth is the best way to keep them healthy.
The Blue Cross has a step-by-step guide on how to get your dog used to a toothbrush. It takes time, so be patient! If you have a cat, they need dental care too. The Royal Veterinary College also provides advice for kitty teeth. A clean mouth means a much happier pet who can eat all their favourite treats without any pain.
5. Keeping the Paperwork Tidy 📁

Sometimes, the best thing we can do for our pets is the boring stuff. Make sure your pet’s microchip has your correct phone number and address. This is the fastest way to get them home if they ever get lost. Petlog is a great place to check your details.
There are new rules you need to know about, too. For example, the law now says all cats must be microchipped in England. If your cat is not chipped yet, make an appointment with your vet soon. You can find a local vet using the RCVS “Find a Vet” tool. It is also a good idea to book a yearly “MOT” or health check. Vets can spot small problems before they become big ones.
6. Spa Days and Snuggles 🫧

Grooming is not just for fancy show dogs. Brushing your pet helps to remove old fur and keeps their skin healthy. It is also the perfect time to feel for any new lumps or bumps. Woodgreen has a lovely guide on how to groom your cat without any stress.
If your pet has long hair, they might need a brush every single day to stop tangles. For pets with short hair, a weekly brush is a nice way to spend quiet time together.
Here’s to 2026! 🎉
We hope these small goals bring you and your animal friend even closer this year.
