Choosing to get a new pet is a big decision and looking after a pet is a huge undertaking. You need to consider your lifestyle. Cats and dogs have different needs and characteristics, so this decision is influenced as much by the type of lifestyle you have as it is your personal favourite. It’s less about ‘dog vs cat’ and more about which animal would best suit your lifestyle, taking into account your activity levels, the space you have at home, whether you have children or not, and how much time you can give to a pet.

Of course, this decision can be made even harder by the sheer variety of breeds available. Owning a Dachshund, for example, is very different to owning a larger dog like a Labrador.

If your lifestyle is outdoorsy and you have time for walks and keeping active, with lots of outdoor space around you, you may want to choose a dog. Well trained dogs can be good companions on country walks and holidays. Do keep in mind though that dogs can’t be left alone for long hours and need company.

Cats are more solitary creatures and needless one on one time, they are self-sufficient and need less space. But a word or waning some cat breeds need company or they can become anxious. One such breed is a Bengal cat; they love human company and are very tactile.

Choose your pet carefully and keep in mind your future, lifestyle and commitments both work and home life.
