Welcoming a new pet: Top tips for first-time owners

See how we can help protect your four-legged friend from injuries and illnesses

Bringing home a new pet is an exciting time — you’re starting a lifelong bond with a new member of the family. Whether you’ve chosen a playful puppy or a curious kitten, a little planning goes a long way to help them settle in safely and happily.

Get Prepared in Advance

From the moment your pet arrives, their wellbeing is in your hands — so it’s important to be ready. Think ahead about their health, environment, and daily needs.

Health and Vet Care

Before you bring your pet home:

  • Register with a local vet and book an initial check-up.
  • Arrange pet insurance to protect against unexpected costs.
  • Check their health status – the breeder or rescue centre should let you know if any vaccinations, worming, or flea treatments are due soon.

Creating a Safe and Comfortable Home

A calm and secure space helps your pet settle in more easily. Here’s how to prepare:

For Dogs and Puppies:

  • Set up a cosy bed or covered crate in a quiet area.
  • Ask the breeder for a scented item (like a blanket or toy from the mother) to ease the transition.
  • Make sure your garden is secure, with no escape routes or hazards.

For Cats and Kittens:

  • Start them in a quiet room away from household hustle and bustle.
  • Provide a bed, litter tray, and separate food/water bowls — cats prefer these spaced apart.
  • Let them explore the rest of the house slowly, and wait at least two weeks before allowing outdoor access.
  • Consider using a pheromone diffuser to help them feel at ease.

For All Pets:

  • Remove toxic plants and potential hazards around the home and garden.
  • Microchipping is essential: it’s a legal requirement for dogs, and highly recommended for cats. Don’t forget to update your details with the chip registry.
  • Dogs must wear a collar with your name, address, and postcode when in public. A phone number is a smart optional extra.

Feeding and Diet

A proper diet supports a healthy start:

  • Stick to the same food your pet is used to, then transition slowly to a new diet over 10–14 days.
  • Feeding needs vary:
    • Puppies may need 3–4 small meals a day.
    • Cats and kittens often prefer two main meals with some dry food to graze on.
  • Keep treats in moderation and make sure they’re suitable for your pet’s age and life stage.

Toys and Playtime

It’s tempting to spoil your new pet with toys — but less is more at first:

  • Start with a small variety to see what they enjoy.
  • Be mindful of overstimulation, especially in the early days.
  • Make sure children understand when it’s time to let your pet rest and recharge.
