What is pet insurance?
Pet insurance helps you cover the cost of veterinary treatment if your pet falls ill or gets injured. To learn about pet insurance cover, what it’s there for and how it can help, read our guide to how pet insurance works. Pet insurance policies generally fall into 5 main categories:
Pre-existing conditions pet insurance
Pre-existing conditions cover is a new addition to some pet insurers cover options. It seeks to provide cover for medical conditions that your pet may already suffer from.
Lifetime cover pet insurance
Lifetime cover is the most comprehensive pet insurance on the market and seeks to insure against recurring medical issues your pet may have throughout its lifetime, as long as you keep the policy running.
Maximum benefit pet insurance
Maximum benefit pet insurance normally cover new conditions up to a cover limit for the length the policy is in place and there’s not a time limit to your claim. Maximum benefit cover is generally considered a mid-range option.
Accident only pet insurance
Accident-only pet insurance provides a fixed sum of money for each accidental injury to help pay for your pet’s treatment. It is the cheapest type of pet insurance policy but excludes cover for illness entirely.
Some pet insurance providers also pay out if your pet dies, is lost or stolen or causes damage to a third party’s property.
